Pilates Teacher Training

Interested in becoming a teacher? You have come to the right place!

After 24 years in the fitness industry I have experienced both amazing trainings for fitness professionals and unfortunately also some not-so-amazing trainings. There are so many choices concerning instructor training programs, from weekend certifications to a PhD in exercise science. This industry is in desperate need of highly qualified instructors and trainers. We have too many in this field who lack experience and proper training, consequently promoting wrong information and ineffective exercises.

I would like to help elevate the industry one instructor at a time.

I believe in high quality education, not just in Pilates, but also in kinesiology and exercise science. All instructors teaching movement need to have a good understanding of anatomy, functional movements, injuries, and basic exercise science.

Where to start? Pick an excellent foundational program. Don’t attend a weekend certification course. Choose at minimum a 500hr comprehensive Pilates teacher training, 1000hr is even better! “Comprehensive” means learning how to teach on the reformer, chair, barrels, and cadillac/trapeze. Eventually take more than one! I have achieved two contemporary 500hr teacher training certifications (Mindful Movement & Balanced Body), plus one classical 500hr bridge program (The Pilates Center). Always keep learning to continue your evolution as an instructor.

I thoroughly endorse picking a classical Pilates teacher training program over a contemporary program as I believe it’s important to know the roots of the method.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Pilates Center (TPC), located in Boulder Co. My host advisor Alison Denham is located in Vancouver and I have learned a great deal from her years of experience. Her sister, Katherine Denham, own’s Kalijo Studio in Sechelt, and is a wealth of knowledge as a TPC licensed teacher trainer. It’s recommended you go visit the studio in Boulder at least twice for their annual trainee weekends. Rachel Taylor Siegel has recently retired, but Amy Alpers Siegel is still teaching, and both sisters are brilliant in their knowledge of Pilates.

Locally, another excellent program is offered at Pilates From The Centre in North Vancouver. Fabulous teaching faulty with Veronica McClurg, Matilda Christensen, and Tracy Dekker. As well as, Beyond Pilates Teacher Training program lead by the knowledgeable and highly skilled Noam Gagnon (learned from 1st generation teacher Jay Grimes).

During your teacher training program, you are welcome to observe classes here at the studio, and eventually teach Sunday’s student-led classes. I would like to help you succeed in having a rewarding teaching career with the knowledge you need to keep your clients healthy and achieving their goals.
