Eight studies demonstrated that the Pilates group had a statistically significant decrease in pain and five of the studies reported statistically significant decrease in disability (Byrnes et al.). Developing the deep intrinsic core muscles has long been known to help reduce chronic low back pain. Transverse abdominis and multifidus act like a natural corset which provides essential support and stability to the pelvis and spine. One of Pilates main objectives is the activation and development of the stabilizing muscles.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Concerning osteoporosis, both studies included in the above mentioned systematic review showed statistically significant improvements in pain and quality of life in the Pilates group when compared to the control and comparator group. One was a year-long randomized control trial comparing twice weekly 60 minute sessions of Pilates lead by a certified teacher to the control group doing Pilates at home. The comparator home group did show improvement too, just not as much as the Pilates teacher-lead group (Küçükçakır et al.). The other study was 24-weeks long, 3 weekly clinical 60 minute Pilates sessions lead by a physiotherapist trained in Pilates compared to the control group which did no exercise (Angın et al.). At the end of the study, the Pilates group bone mineral density scores were significantly higher, whereas the control group’s values decreased. The pain in the Pilates group decreased significantly (Angın et al.).</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Unlike the Reformer, which moves back and forth on rails, the Trapeze Table/Tower remains stationary (Manheim, 2020). Positioned on the cushioned mat, we hold either handles or bar attached to springs of varying tension (Manheim, 2020).  The stable base of the Trapeze Table/Tower makes this apparatus less intimidating than the Reformer with its moving parts (Manheim, 2020). The Trapeze Table/Tower is ideal for beginning students, as well as, those who are recovering from injuries (Manheim, 2020). There’s very little pressure on the joints because your body weight is supported by the cushioned mat (Manheim, 2020). The Trapeze Table/Tower is also perfect for seasoned students of Pilates, as we can slow down and focus on spinal articulation exercises that connect us deeply to our core. Also the springs can be adjusted to challenge our muscles during the concentric (shortening phase), as well as, the eccentric (lengthening phase) of the contraction. Studies demonstrate focusing on the eccentric phase of muscular contractions leads to greater strengthening, as well as, increased flexibility if performing the exercises through full ranges of motion.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Years ago, I used to lift heavy weights with high volumes. It wasn’t my favourite way to work out, but I did it because all my fellow trainers did. My joints were often sore from the heavy loads, and eventually I received two acute injuries: one in 2002 I sprained a ligament in my low back (left sacroiliac joint) and in 2018 I strained my rotator cuff (left supraspinatus tear). After the tear, I did what I do best and researched (my old journalism degree coming in handy). I found several high quality studies demonstrating there are various successful resistance training methods for hypertrophy.</image:caption>
